In our walk with God, there comes a time when He calls us to not only embrace His promises but to cut off what no longer aligns with His will. Abraham’s journey is a powerful example of this. God changed his name, giving him a new identity, yet before the fulfillment of the covenant, there was one more step—circumcision.
God told Abraham in Genesis 17:1, “Walk before me and be blameless.” But to walk blamelessly, some things had to be severed. This act of circumcision wasn’t just a physical requirement; it symbolized a deeper spiritual truth. God was saying, "There’s something attached to you that must be cut off before you can fully walk in my covenant." And the same applies to us today.
What Needs to Be Cut Off?
Like Abraham, we may be walking with God, doing our best to obey, but there are still things He is calling us to remove—old habits, sin, bitterness, fear, unforgiveness, or anything that stands between us and His promises. The cutting may be painful, but it is necessary for growth. Hebrews 12:1 reminds us, “Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.”
Sometimes, we hold onto things because they are familiar. But just like a tree must be pruned to bear more fruit (John 15:2), we must be willing to undergo the painful process of cutting away the unnecessary so that we can thrive in Christ.
The Power of Transformation
The enemy wants to keep us bound by reminding us of our past. He whispers lies that we will never change, never break free. But God declares differently. Just as He changed Abram to Abraham, Sarai to Sarah, and Simon to Peter, He is calling us into a new identity. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
When God changes your name, He changes your destiny. He changes the way people see you, the way you see yourself, and most importantly, the way He uses you for His glory. No longer shall we be called broken, lost, or defeated—we are children of the Most High God.
A Call to Action
What is God asking you to cut off today? Maybe it’s a toxic relationship, a mindset of fear, a sinful habit, or a hurt from the past that you haven’t released. Whatever it is, surrender it. Trust that the pain of letting go is temporary, but the blessings of obedience are eternal. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. (Psalm 30:5)
Today, let us declare in faith:
Instead, we will walk in covenant, transformation, and victory. God has called us to be more, and He is faithful to complete what He started in us (Philippians 1:6). Let’s rise up and move forward—no longer the same, but forever changed by His power!
