In our walk with God, we often have our own plans—ideas about what our lives will look like and who we’ll become. But God frequently disrupts our expectations, revealing that His plans for us are far greater than anything we could imagine. This message dives into one man’s powerful journey from a broken past to a future of purpose, demonstrating how God can redeem and transform every part of our story.

The Search for Worth and Identity

Each of us searches for our worth in different ways. Society often tells us that our value comes from accomplishments, relationships, or approval from others. But true worth is found only in understanding who we are in Christ.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”Jeremiah 29:11

This verse reveals God's personal commitment to each of us. God’s plans are specific; He knows each of us individually and longs to fulfill His purpose through us. For Mando, a speaker and author, this realization began in one of the most unlikely places—a humble IHOP on a date with the woman who would become his wife.

  • Knowing Your Worth: Often, we look to relationships or accomplishments to define our value. However, God calls us to recognize our worth in His eyes first and foremost.
  • Redefining Expectations: On his first date, Mando shared that he had no plans to marry, have children, or settle down with a Mexican American woman—God had a different story in mind. He met someone who challenged him to envision a different future, one filled with purpose.

In a powerful way, Mando’s first date became a prophetic moment, reminding him that God's plans would override his personal limitations. He went on to marry that woman and have children, living a life that contradicted every statement he had made that night. His experience is a reminder that when we yield to God’s will, we find fulfillment beyond our dreams.

Overcoming a Painful Past

Growing up in East LA, Mando was entrenched in gang life from a young age. He lived a life of fear and hopelessness, believing he’d never reach adulthood. The world around him painted a bleak future, constantly reminding him that his life was destined for failure. However, God had a different destiny planned.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”John 10:10

Through this verse, we see that while darkness tries to claim lives, Jesus offers us fullness. No matter how dark a person’s story may be, God’s light can redeem it. Mando’s journey shows how God can take someone from a background of violence and despair and lead them into purpose and peace.

  1. Freedom from Past Trauma: Many people carry past hurts, believing these define them. Mando’s story reveals that no amount of trauma can stop God’s plans.
  2. A New Identity in Christ: Growing up hearing he was “no good,” Mando embraced a false identity. But God’s truth reveals that each of us is cherished, created in His image, and destined for a unique purpose.

Mando’s sister played a crucial role in his transformation by standing in the gap as a persistent intercessor, praying daily for his salvation. Her unwavering prayers helped open doors for Mando’s heart to encounter Christ. This dedication serves as a powerful example of the influence we can have on others through prayer.

Surrendering to God’s Call

Following years of living a destructive life, Mando had a transformative experience at a church service. In a room filled with people who loved him, he encountered peace and acceptance for the first time. He gave his life to Christ, realizing that God was offering him a new path, away from a life of fear and violence.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”2 Corinthians 5:17

Becoming a “new creation” in Christ wasn’t a simple journey for Mando. He faced challenges from his past life, even risking his life to walk away from his gang. Yet, with God’s help, he found courage to pursue a new life.

  1. Courage to Change: Embracing transformation meant walking into dangerous situations, knowing that God’s hand was on his life.
  2. An Unshakable Peace: The peace that Mando felt in God’s presence helped him navigate even the most threatening encounters, holding onto the promise that his life was now hidden in Christ.

Finding Purpose Through Redemption

God’s love has a powerful way of redeeming and restoring us in ways we may not anticipate. In Mando’s case, God had given him a dream as a young boy—to one day be on television. Although he couldn’t pursue this dream during his gang years, God ultimately brought him into Christian television, working with leaders like Jim Bakker and others who saw God’s purpose in him.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”Romans 8:28

No matter where we come from, God weaves our experiences into His purpose. As an adult, Mando achieved his childhood dream of working in television, not for fame but to share God’s word and bring hope to others. His past, which the enemy meant for harm, became a powerful testimony of God’s ability to turn any story into one of hope and impact.

  1. Walking in Destiny: God has specific plans for each of us, and He is faithful to guide us toward fulfilling them.
  2. Testifying of God’s Power: Mando’s journey from gang life to ministry illustrates how God redeems lives for His glory, using even our deepest pains to bless others.

Equipping the Church for What’s Ahead

God doesn’t just redeem us individually—He calls us collectively to be His hands and feet in a world that needs Him desperately. Mando reminds us that the church must prepare for a time of spiritual and societal challenges. Today, God calls believers to be both spiritually and practically prepared, with eyes open to the signs of the times and hearts ready to serve.

“Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets.”Amos 3:7

God uses His church to prepare His people, warning us through prophetic words, scripture, and the guidance of His Spirit. As a church, we must become equipped not just for ourselves, but to offer hope and provision to others in times of crisis.

  1. A Call to Practical Readiness: The Bible teaches us that there will be difficult times ahead, and believers must be wise, storing resources and preparing for unforeseen challenges.
  2. Hearing God’s Voice: More than ever, it’s essential to discern God’s voice, allowing Him to direct us in critical decisions. Without His guidance, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the uncertainties of the world.

Closing: Embracing God’s Redemptive Plan

Each of us has a story, and each story matters to God. Mando’s testimony is a powerful reminder that no matter our past or present struggles, God can turn everything for our good and His glory. If we open ourselves to His love, surrendering our lives to His guidance, God will lead us into a future far more incredible than anything we could plan.

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.”Psalm 23:1-3

May we all take heart in knowing that God has a plan for us, a plan that leads to hope, peace, and restoration. Just as Mando’s life was transformed by God’s redeeming love, we too can find freedom, purpose, and peace as we follow Him. Let us remain steadfast in prayer, unwavering in faith, and prepared to embrace the future God has for us.
